Three BJJ Blue Belt Promotions at KGB GYM
Congratulations to Luke Ellery, Jarad Khan and Connor Elias on earning their well-deserved BJJ blue belt promotions at KGB GYM in Briton Ferry. All three grapplers received their new belts from coach Dafydd "Deejay" Davies, who leads the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu programme at the gym alongside head coach James Wallis. The blue belt is a significant milestone in any jiu-jitsu practitioner's journey. It represents a strong understanding of fundamental positions, submissions and escapes, and typically takes years of consistent training to achieve. For Luke, Jarad and Connor, this promotion is the result of countless hours on the mats and massive improvements across their grappling games. Luke Ellery in particular has built a reputation as a savage on the mat, with huge improvements in his jiu-jitsu over the past year. His aggressive, submission-first style has made him one of the standout grapplers at the gym. Jarad and Connor have also shown massive development in their grappling, earning praise from coaches and training partners alike for their consistency and dedication to the art. KGB GYM offers BJJ classes for all levels throughout the week, with dedicated gi and no-gi sessions covering everything from guard passing and sweeps to submission chains and positional control. Deejay, who was recently promoted to brown belt himself under Dai Evans at Mamas Academy, has been instrumental in developing the next generation of grapplers at KGB GYM. His coaching focuses on building solid fundamentals while encouraging an aggressive, attack-first style that has become a trademark of the gym's BJJ team. Training under the Adrenalin KGB Wallis banner, the team continues to grow its reputation as one of the strongest grappling programmes in the Swansea, Neath and Port Talbot area. Whether you are a complete beginner looking to try your first class or an experienced grappler searching for quality training partners, KGB GYM in Briton Ferry welcomes all levels. The gym serves students from across Swansea, Neath, Port Talbot, Bridgend and the surrounding valleys. Contact the gym or drop in for a free trial session to experience the welcoming, hard-working culture that helped Luke, Jarad and Connor reach this milestone.

James "Lights Out" Lilley Wins by First-Round KO at BKFC Newcastle
James "Lights Out" Lilley added another knockout to his growing bare knuckle boxing record with a devastating first-round finish of Yannick Van Dinther at BKFC Fight Night Newcastle on Saturday 14 March 2026. The KGB GYM welterweight needed just 38 seconds to put Van Dinther away at the Utilita Arena in front of a packed Newcastle crowd. Van Dinther stepped in as a late replacement after the original opponent, Gary Fox, was forced to withdraw due to injury, but the change made no difference to Lilley's game plan. From the opening bell, Lilley controlled the distance with his trademark southpaw stance and tight boxing fundamentals. He landed 16 of 27 punches thrown (59.3% accuracy) compared to Van Dinther's 10 of 22 (45.5%), dropping his opponent with a perfectly timed combination that ended the fight with a single knockdown. The victory continues an impressive run for the Welsh bare knuckle fighter, who trains out of KGB GYM in Briton Ferry under head coach James Wallis. Following his previous knockout victory over Fran Suarez in June 2025, Lilley has now established himself as one of the most dangerous welterweights on the BKFC roster. "There's no luck in these shots," said Lilley's corner team after the fight. "It's something that's drilled and drilled and drilled until one comes after the other naturally. He doesn't work on luck, he works on precision and accuracy." The BKFC Fight Night Newcastle card also featured the inaugural UK heavyweight title fight, won by Mick Terrill, making it a landmark night for bare knuckle boxing in the United Kingdom.

In Loving Memory: Mike "The Hammer" Edwards
It's hard to explain Mike to people who never met him. When you first saw him - this big, intimidating guy - you'd never guess he was probably more nervous to say hello than you were. Some mistook his quietness for rudeness, but it was just anxiety. He was always trying. But once you were in Mike's circle, once you became his training partner, he would do anything to help you improve. His dedication was incredible. He studied constantly - MMA, BJJ, kickboxing, boxing, catch wrestling - and his technique in everything was flawless. Almost like he had too much to pick from. He never missed a session. James once picked him up for training before a fight and Mike was on crutches. He limped to the mats, sat down and said "come on then." That was Mike. His ground and pound got so good because he had a punch bag but nowhere to hang it - so he just hit it on the floor. Most would have let it gather dust. Not Mike. To James Wallis, Mike was his first MMA and grappling coach, his cornerman for every fight, and the man he started KGB GYM with. The memories will last forever. Raise a glass to Welsh MMA legend Mike "The Hammer" Edwards.

In Loving Memory: Andrew "Burty" Johns
Welsh MMA legend Brett Johns pays an emotional tribute to his father, Andrew "Burty" Johns, during his retirement interview with S4C. In a deeply moving moment, Brett spoke from the heart about the man who shaped him - not just as a fighter, but as a person. Burty was more than a father; he was Brett's biggest supporter, the one who believed in him when others doubted, and the foundation upon which a world champion was built. This tribute captures the unbreakable bond between father and son, and reminds us all of the sacrifices our loved ones make for our dreams. Gone but never forgotten.
